Under the supervision of the Hatchery Manager I, the incumbent conducts all aspects of fish culture, which includes trapping, spawning, rearing, feeding, treating Chinook salmon and steelhead trout. This position will also perform grounds and building maintenance and repair (including use of hand tools). Operate forklifts, trucks, pumps, fish loaders, and other types of mechanical equipment.

The incumbent will be required to work some holidays, weekends, evening or night shifts and special events. Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, around water, and uneven ground. This position requires possession of a valid Class C driver’s license. Must maintain a clean driving record. This position will require occasional travel within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include an overnight stay). Be able to operate (with department training) forklifts, fish pumps, feed carts, fish crowders, Class C trucks, and utility vehicles. Must be able to perform basic math and collect data. The position requires limited travel to project and facility locations throughout the Region. The position involves using a variety of specialized and common tools, meters, pumps, and vehicles to perform the duties. State housing is not available. Wearing a prescribed CDFW uniform is required.
Ability to lift 40 pounds, swim 50 yards and stay afloat for at least five minutes.
This position requires possession of a valid Class C Driver's License. Must maintain a clean driving record. The selected candidate may be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration.

Experience working with fish or wildlife and some knowledge of plumbing, welding, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical skills. Basic math knowledge and experience in collecting, organizing, analyzing and entering data; a high degree of personal initiative; an ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment; possess both written, verbal, critical thinking, and communication skills. Aptitude for wildlife conservation work, willingness to do heavy manual labor, keenness for observation, tact, and reliability. Ability to work in all types of weather.
